Idaho is home to some of the world's rarest stones, and in some cases, it's the only place where certain types can be found. A community about a three-hour drive northeast of Twin Falls is reportedly the only place in the world where a rare form of opal has been unearthed.

Along with summer comes rockhounding season. There's no place on Earth where more precious and semi-precious stones are found than the Gem State.

For those who love the thrill of the hunt, there's a community of under 40 residents that welcomes the public to come out and sift through a massive rock pile to attempt to uncover rare opals. The Pink Fire Opal is said to only be found in Idaho, and the stones have been dug up in the past by visitors to Spencer, a 62-mile drive north of Idaho Falls.

To say if you blink, you'll miss Spencer isn't an exaggeration. The fact that this town is a known hotspot for opals, however, makes it a definite stopping point for rockhounders traveling through Clark County, which is known as the 'Opal Capital of America.'

The Spencer Opal Mines are one of the largest privately owned operations in America, and you'll want to take time to ask locals where the site is that the public is allowed to hunt. Make sure you don't enter private property with your stone digging supplies.
