Rockhounding season is underway in Idaho. Home to over 70 varieties of precious and semi-precious stones, the Gem State is a stone seeker's paradise.

Rockhounding isn't a hobby that's going to make most people wealthy. Those who truly find enjoyment in the hobby are outdoor enthusiasts and geology buffs, and uncovering a unique stone is a bonus of the hunt.

I have a friend who is an avid rockhound and has been for more than three decades. He told me that for every dozen or so times he packs his equipment and heads out seeking gems in Idaho, he might actually uncover something once. The skill takes patience, and making money should never be the focus of such outings.

Aged quartzite and pyrite are thought to lie near this Wood River Valley mountain, and are most commonly found in clusters of rock near riverbeds, according to Friends of the Big Sioux River.

Just remember, never enter private property or private mineral plots in search of stones. To do so, could be risking your life.
