It’s no secret there are homeless people in Twin Falls.  I met one a few days ago.  It was 5:30 A.M.  Rain was falling and it was 38 degrees.  He was sleeping in a laundromat.  When I came in the door it woke him.  We exchanged “good mornings” and then he closed his eyes and went back to sleep.  Two days later I saw him again.

He was crossing the street at Locust and Kimberly.

Maybe he has a job but he doesn’t have a permanent roof over his head.

I often think it may be the difference between someone losing all hope versus getting the strength to keep moving.

There are people who are homeless because of addictions.  Some with psychological issues and some may no longer be able to afford rising rental costs.  He may be among the latter.

Yesterday I shared some pictures with friends.  Scarves hanging from the bridge over Rock Creek Canyon on Washington Street.  It’s one of a few locations where people leave scarves and gloves for the homeless.  Many take up shelter in the caves and crevices along the canyon.

I shared with friends this is a sign of Twin Falls remaining a Christian community.  Late in the day I received a response from a friend in Delaware.  “Wow!” was all she said.

A “muffler” as my mom would call the cloth she wrapped around my neck before school may seem a small item for many but for someone walking on a cold windy day, it’s a kindness.  I often think it may be the difference between someone losing all hope versus getting the strength to keep moving.

A story I rarely share deals with my own lack of a home.  I’d taken a job and gave my notice on an apartment.  Then at the last minute the fellow who hired me was fired.  My job left with him.  A new tenant was taking my place.  I stayed for a time in the basement of a friend while I worked on a loading dock.  Then a day came along when a radio station telephoned and offered me work.  My friend, a devout Christian, gave me a roof and hope my situation wasn’t permanent.
