TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX) – The Magic Valley Regional Airport will seek approval from the City Council on Monday to utilize land for an air cargo sorting facility.

The proposal needs approval from both the Airport Advisory Board, which gave its recommendation on March 1, and City Council.

“We’ve been looking at this for a while and have identified a spot,” said airport Manager Bill Carberry. “Having a sorting facility onsite would create a lot of efficiencies.”

The proposed site for the 17,873 square-foot sorting facility is a 3-acre parcel just east of the terminal. FedEx would lease the selected spot and build the facility, which will have road access and a front lobby for customers. Revenue from the lease would help with the operation and maintenance of the airport.

Sorting cargo would become more efficient at the onsite facility instead of taking it to a FedEx office in town for sorting, Carberry said

If the city approves the land use proposal, the next step would be to finalize the lease agreement. Construction would likely begin this spring, with the facility tentatively opening in spring or summer of 2017.

“We’re still working through the lease agreement,” he said. “We have a good, solid concept and right now we’re just seeking approval from the city to utilize the land.”
