What would you do? What would you do if you bought a new puppy, brought it home, and found out it was sick or had a deathly disease and needed to be treated or put down? Would you cough up the cash to save your new family member? Would you say it isn't worth it and put them down before the family gets too attached? Would you contact the seller and ask them to help you cover it or report them for selling a sick or dying dog? Sadly, this is a reality for some people excited to add to their family, but if it were to happen to you, what would you do?

Getting a new puppy should be an exciting time. You know it will be a process to get it trained, there will be sleepless nights and plenty of messes to clean up, but these are things you prepare for. Everyone's worst nightmare is bringing home their new furry baby only to find out something is wrong. It is concerning and your heart breaks to find out your new family member is not well, but it can also take a toll financially as well as it is likely you have not had time to get pet insurance yet to help with such a situation. When finding out that your new puppy is sick or potentially dying, how should you handle it?

My wife and I bought a puppy years ago, and after bringing it home and falling in love with her, found out she was sick after a couple of days at our home. After taking her to the vet we discovered that she had parvovirus. For those unaware of the virus, it often kills puppies, and the sooner you catch it the better chance they have to survive, which they will need to spend multiple days with around-the-clock care. Luckily, our puppy did survive and gave us 8 great years and was worth every penny we spent on her to save her life, despite putting us in thousands of dollars of debt. Not everyone is fortunate enough to do so and it was a tough decision, but we decided it was worth a chance, and luckily it worked out for us. We reached out to the sellers and they refused to help and ghosted us, making it seem that they sold knowing these puppies were sick.

If you find yourself in this situation it will test your love for your new dog. Do you do what my wife and I did and go into debt? Do you put the dog down and count your loss? Do you sue the sellers and hope to win and force them to pay the medical bill? There is no right or wrong answer, and it depends on your situation, but hopefully, you never have to make that choice. If you are sold a sick or dying puppy though, what would you do?
