Watch Avalanche Barrel Down Sawtooth Mt. Into The Big Wood River
The avalanche danger might be moderate in the Wood River Valley, but that doesn't mean it isn't still dangerous. Check out this video from March 2nd of the first avalanche of the season barreling down the Sawtooth Mountains into the Big Wood River.
According to the Sawtooth Avalanche Center, this video was taken along the Big Wood River at the foot of Della Mountain. I know many of us are getting excited for the warmer temperatures, but the constant influx of cold and warm temperatures mixed with additional snowfall can cause an increase in avalanche dangers.
According to the Sawtooth Avalanche Center, wet snow avalanches are possible and the risk increases with snowpack less than a couple of feet thick. And obviously, the danger increases more when the snow is on a large, steep slope.
On March 2nd, there were several avalanches reported, this is the first one of the season caught on camera. I would not want to be in the way of that. I pretty much avoid the Hailey and Ketchum area if there is any snow around because I am so afraid of getting caught in an avalanche. Remember, avalanches can also be human-caused.
At least there was no real damage in this video, the snow just barrels into the water and moves along on its way. And it feels like it is never-ending. Still, a cool video to watch.
