BEWARE: Mountain Lions Attack Pets in the Gem State

Living in Idaho, it is expected that from time to time wildlife will make its way into town. Usually, it is a deer, an elk, or many small critters. These animals will typically make their way through town and scatter once spooked without any harm. Certain animals make their way into town from time to time though that are more dangerous and can be terrifying to come across. Not only are they threatening to humans, but they can be threatening to pets in the area. Recently, Idaho Fish and Game has gotten some calls about mountain lions in a certain area, and they have been attacking pets in residential areas.

Mountain Lion Attacks in Wood River Valley

It is early in the year, but multiple reports have already been called in about mountain lion attacks in the Wood River Valley. Earlier this month a report was called in about a mountain lion that got into an animal enclosure in a residential area. It was reported that the lion killed 11 chickens, 2 geese, 6 ducks, and one house cat. Fish and Game were able to track down the lion, capture it, and euthanize it. A second lion was spotted and reported to have attacked two dogs on January 18. Both dogs survived the attack, but the lion is yet to be located as of this writing. 

What to Do If Approached by a Mountain Lion in Idaho

If by chance you do see a mountain lion out in the wild, in your backyard, or approaching nearby, there are a few rules to remember and follow. The number one rule is do not run. Like most predators, mountain lions like to chase down their meals, and the worst thing you can do is run from a mountain lion. Another important rule is to never turn your back on the animal. Keep your eyes on it at all times. Make sure to back away, but go slowly. It is important to not have any quick movements while the beast is watching you. One more important rule, that should seem obvious, but if a mountain lion does attack you, do NOT play dead. Make sure to fight back with all your strength and energy, as it could be your only hope.

Make sure to keep your pets in an enclosure or bring them to your home, especially with known mountain lions in the area.
