Summer is in full swing and Mother Nature has let Idaho residents know it already this season. While the temperatures have not been unbearable yet, there have been a few days that have been hotter than residents prefer. With a few days already in the mid-to-high 90s, it is expected that temperatures will continue to rise as June progresses and July and August approach. There are certain things Idahoans need to do before the heat waves take over and dominate Idaho daily, and it is best to prepare before it is too late.

As summer goes on and the temperatures get closer to triple digits, it is important to remember to stay hydrated, especially when mowing the yard, doing outdoor work, playing or attending sporting events, and spending any significant time outside. This is especially important when hiking, camping, kayaking, or spending time away from a water source. It is also important to remember to apply sunscreen, to help avoid severe sunburns, skin cancer, and to protect your body to the best of your ability. These should be common sense, but those unfamiliar with Idaho heat might be surprised to feel how hot it can get and how quickly the sun can affect a person on a hot summer day.

It is important to make sure that you do not leave anything in your car that will not do well with heat. If you leave any food or water in your car, make sure to toss it immediately. Make sure to not leave your children or pets in the car, even if running into the house or a store for only a few minutes. Crack your windows and make sure to use sun guards if you have one to keep the inside of your car cool.  If you do not have central air conditioning, it is now time to pull out your window units or whatever means you use to keep your home cool, as you want them ready to go before a triple-digit day occurs and your house is too warm to enjoy. Make sure to keep windows and doors shut to keep bugs out, and the warm weather from taking over your home, and to keep the house cool keep the blinds closed as well.

These may seem like simple things and things that everyone should know, but with the weather fluctuating it is best to be prepared and know in advance how to keep your home and car cool. The heat is fast approaching and this summer is expected to be a warm one with days of triple digits around the corner.
