Watch World’s Smartest Man Show Idaho How to Approach a Moose
Idaho has had its share of wild animal encounters, and our neighbors in Yellowstone have seen far too many close calls from people who don't seem to understand that wild animals are for enjoying at a distance and avoiding in close quarters.
If you haven't seen this video of a man from Alaska who has a near run in with a moose, you need to check it out. In a world that seems to have forgotten how you're supposed to handle an encounter with a wild animal, we've finally found one guy who actually gets it.
I'm going to break down the example that he sets so that you can print out this handy guide for dealing with moose in the wild for future reference.
1. Don't panic.
I bet when he started his short jaunt to the rubbish bin, he wasn't expecting to see a bull moose honing in on his position. But this dude makes a fast decision to make himself invisible and he does so quickly and calmly.
2. He treats the moose like a door-to-door salesman.
Notice how the man in the video barely gives himself time to take it all in, let alone dwell on the fact that a moose is heading his way. By the way he ducks into the shed, you'd think the moose was out selling solar panels.
3. The man in the video moves in the opposite direction of the moose.
It's hard to say whether this is his first encounter or maybe he's been training for years, but it's almost as if he understands that this animal could potentially be a therat to life and limb. He isn't sticking around to find out.
4. He doesn't try to pet or fondle the moose.
Cuddling with wild animals is all the rage these days but this man isn't one to hop on a trend just to be one of the cool kids.
5. What? No selfie?
While the normal human inclination is to try to find the perfect lighting for a selfie, this man decides that keeping his brain tucked safely inside his skull is the way to go.
So, what's the best way to approach a moose? You don't.
In all seriousness, we've seen so many near death animal encounters in Idaho and all over the Northwest, that could've easily been avoided if more people followed this man's example. If you come across a wild animal, do your best to disappear and put as much distance between you and the creature as quickly and safely as humanly possible.
