Idaho Man Charged with Vehicular Manslaughter in Fatal Crash
Rick Gross, a 61-year-old man from Moyie Springs, Idaho, has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 5-year-old girl. The crash occurred on November 22, 2024, near milepost 490 on US 95 in Bonner County.
Gross faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, three counts of aggravated reckless driving, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. His arrest follows a detailed investigation conducted by the Idaho State Police (ISP) and the Bonner County Prosecutor’s Office. Gross was located and apprehended with the assistance of multiple agencies, including the Boundary County Sheriff’s Office, Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, ISP investigators, and the U.S. Marshals Task Force.
“A family is forever impacted by Mr. Gross’ alleged actions. Hopefully, his arrest and prosecution will provide some closure for the victim’s family,” said U.S. Marshal Brent Bunn.
Details of the Crash
The crash occurred around 8:35 a.m. when Gross, driving a blue 2011 Dodge Ram pickup, attempted to pass multiple vehicles while traveling southbound on US 95. He crossed into the northbound lane, colliding head-on with a black 2008 Ford Edge driven by a 33-year-old woman from Otis Orchards, Washington.
The Ford Edge had three passengers, including a second adult and two juveniles. Tragically, 5-year-old Amelia Carrollo succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Other occupants of the Ford Edge, including the driver, were transported to a local hospital with injuries. Gross, the sole occupant of his vehicle, was also hospitalized.
Community Assistance Requested
The ISP has sought public assistance throughout the investigation. Authorities asked for any vehicle dash camera footage, business surveillance, or Ring doorbell videos from US 95 between milepost 505 in Boundary County and milepost 490 in Bonner County. The requested timeframe for footage was between 6:45 a.m. and 8:35 a.m. on the morning of the crash.
“This investigation is critical to understanding what led to this tragic collision, and we believe someone may have additional information or footage that can help piece together the events leading up to the crash,” said ISP Trooper Travis Bucher.
Impact and Ongoing Investigation
The crash has left a profound impact on the community and the families involved. ISP continues to investigate the incident. The Idaho State Police extend their condolences to the family of Amelia Carrollo and the others affected by this tragedy.
