The weather in Idaho can be confusing most of the time, but overall it isn't too bad. It gets hot in the summer, and cold in the winter, and usually follows logic, but that isn't always the case. There are days that storms come out of nowhere and last for five minutes, only to return to sunshine, or a calm day will see huge gusts of wind, to only die back down. The weather in Idaho can be a mystery, and it causes more frustration and confusion this time of year than any other, and residents don't know how to react.

With summer dwindling, the calendar will flip to fall soon, and during this time Idaho is as confused as any time of year. The morning can start in the 40s, hit the 90s by the afternoon, and then have a storm blow through by the evening. It makes it tough to know how to dress for the day or to make any plans, especially outside. What might be forecasted as a warm clear day, could flip to a chilly wet day. It isn't uncommon to see clouds roll in and the temperatures drop drastically and do so quickly. A day kayaking may turn into a day of survival trying to get off the river or lake, avoiding strong gusts of wind, when less than an hour before it was warm, calm, and sunny. The next month or two is tough to navigate and one day could see a high of 50 and the next could be 85 or 35. Welcome to life in Idaho in the fall.

Trying to figure out how to dress for the day can be tough. If you leave the house early in the morning, wearing a hoodie and jeans might feel nice, but by the early afternoon, you might be burning up. Perhaps you go to school or work and think it is a warm morning, and figure it'll get warmer in the day so you wear shorts and a T-shirt, only for an unexpected storm to come in dropping the temperature and leaving you a tad chilly. The best bet is to prepare for anything and have multiple choices in your car or bag. It isn't safe to leave without a hoodie or jacket and having shorts for warmer weather is a nice luxury.

There are still some slight signs of summer weather, but those days are ending so the confusion will get worse and the frustration on how to prepare for the day will reach its peak. The good news is that while the weather and clothing choices can cause a headache, at least it isn't constantly cold or hot during this period and we can all agree that that is a win. The beautiful days make the confusion and irritation worth it.
