Winter seems to last far too long in Idaho, and when spring finally comes, it relieves many residents in the Gem State. While it is nice to have those first few days of weather above freezing, it typically doesn't last long. The weather soon drops again after false hope, and within a few days, it seems to jump up to summer temperatures. Summer has many benefits, especially in the Magic Valley. There is good fishing, kayaking, hiking, camping, and much more, but with all good things, there are also some negatives. Here are some of the reasons that summer in Idaho sucks.

Summer in Idaho is Expensive

One of the worst parts about summer is the cost. Gas prices go up due to travel season, and it takes a toll on the wallet over the summer. Kids are out of school, and finding childcare for a few months can add up. The utility bills are typically up in the summer as well. The water bill rises to water the grass, and the flowers, and for playing in the yard. The air conditioner is used frequently, which raises the electric bill. If you happen to take a vacation, that is more money spent. Summer adds up, and can be a tad pricey.

When most think of Idaho they think of snow and cold weather, but surprisingly the summers can get a little warm. There are commonly days in the 90s, and even at times in triple digits. It is a dry heat and can take a toll over the hot days. Due to the heat, it plays a factor in why summer is so expensive, as stated above. Luckily, there are ways to cool off in the Gem State, but the heat can be a little much at times.

Summer Traffic Sucks in Idaho

During the summer, kids are out of school, making the roads more crowded. Tourist also make their way to or through Idaho, making the interstate and towns more packed as well. This traffic can make getting places take longer, and the more people on the roads, the more dangerous they are. It leads to more wrecks, which sadly can lead to fatalities. Odd as it is, the roads are almost more dangerous in the summer, than in the winter in Idaho.

As mentioned above, there are kids out on the road during the summer, but those who can't drive, can be bored at times and be looking for something to do. When kids have too much free time, it usually doesn't end well. We all remember being kids, and summer days with nothing to do was often when most of us did things we shouldn't have been doing. You hope that they will take advantage of their time to have fun, but what their definition of fun is can determine what they do with that free time.

Idaho is home to some big nasty bugs, and they all come out in the summer. The flies can be annoying, the spiders can be scary, and the wasps can be aggressive. One nice thing about long winters is the lack of these critters, but during the summer they are out with a vengeance. Make sure to leave your doors shut, your window screens on, and bug spray nearby at all times.
