Let's face it: some people are just hard to shop for. Still, that's no reason to drop a bum gift on them. Here are the top Christmas gifts for men and women to avoid.

Santander Cards asked 2,000 men and women what their most unwanted Christmas gift was. Here's what they came up with:

For Men:

• Socks
• A bad sweater
• Books they've already read
• Cheap cologne
• Toiletries
• Slippers
• A mug
• A calendar
• Chocolate
• A handkerchief
• Second-hand stuff

For Women:

• Cheap perfumes & toiletries
• Cheap jewellery
• Make-up that doesn’t suit me
• Bad sweater
• Candle
• Second-hand items
• Book I already have/read
• Chocolate
• Scarf
• Calendar

“It’s impossible to please everyone all of the time, as Christmas gifts are very personal and subjective,” said Alan Mathewson, CEO of Santander Cards, which conducted the study.

“At a time when most people are shopping on a budget, looking for quality over quantity, and keeping an eye out for discounts, cashback offers and other ways to keep costs down, is a great approach to take.”

Still, this isn't the "be all, end all" list. Some women may really want a scarf, and some guys might dig a nice pair of slippers.
