A dairy located roughly 25 miles south of the Idaho border in Utah has tested positive for a strain of influenza spread by birds and capable of infecting surrounding cattle and potentially sickening humans at the facility.

Avian influenza has been detected at a dairy south of Preston, Idaho, in the city of Logan. This strain of influenza can spread to livestock and human beings, although illness in people is much more uncommon.

According to ABC Utah News 4, avian flu (HPAI) is 'highly pathogenic,' meaning it can cause illness in people and animals that come into contact with an infected bird's feces, mucous, or saliva.

The dairy plant where the positive test was discovered was reported as Gibbons Dairy Farm, in Cache County, according to ABC4 Utah. Dairy officials believe the exposure is contained to the facility.

Avian influenza symptoms in humans includes fever, nausea, chills, headache and other reactions, according to the Bear River Health Department. The source of the exact spread has yet to be determined, but dairy management has reportedly been taking every known precaution to prevent further spread of the illness, according to ABC4 Utah.

Logan is located just 26 miles south of Preston, Idaho, in the southeastern portion of the state. There have been no reports of the flu strain from southern Idaho ranches to date.
