It used to seem like a simple question or one that didn't even need to be asked. Walking down the street it was easy to know who was a male and who was a female. Even when meeting someone online, the question used to be only two letters, 'M or F?' That was when things were simple, but times have changed, and it isn't as easy as it used to be. Male and female are the two genders assigned at birth, but society has changed and the older an individual gets, the more options they have. Idaho would like to think it is still that simple, but the reality is nobody identifies as simply male or female anymore in the Gem State.

A friend of mine recently on a dating site saw an ad that mentioned being cissexual and cis female. He asked me what this meant, and I had no idea. After doing some research, we concluded that this is how people identify nowadays to let others know they are the gender they were born and identify as. In simpler times, this woman's ad would have said she was a straight female, instead of making it more complicated by letting others know she was born a female, identifies as a female, and is cissexual, meaning she is straight. In today's world, it seems nothing is simple, including letting others know your sexual preference or what your gender is.

With President Trump having come out recently and saying there are only two genders, male and female, it would appear things are headed back to more simple times, but will society allow that? The terms cis female and cis male are not entirely new, but many have not adopted them and applied them to life. For those in the dating world, it is a must, as it is a common question and one that those dating often fear when looking for a partner or potential date. Not everyone will use these terms, but my friend and I found it interesting that many dating apps and sites are now going out of their way to specify when it used to not be a question of what gender or who someone was.
