There are certain laws that nobody agrees with and nobody wants, but we are forced to obey. Each state has different rules and laws, and some you hope your state will adapt to and others you hope never make their way here. One such law that passed years ago in California was that each store must charge for the use of a bag. It is only ten cents per bag, but over time it adds up and has upset many residents through the years. This rule seems like it would never come to Idaho, but it may already have and could be spreading state-wide soon.

Charging for Bags in Stores in Idaho

When checking out at a store, a bag should be expected, and not something that should be charged or taxed. My wife was running errands recently and stopped in Petco, only to find out when checking out that they have begun charging ten cents per bag as they do in California. While it is only one store, how long is it until other stores begin to follow? Could this become a national thing, or is it just a major chain deciding to make some extra money? Twin Falls residents hope it is only the one store and that others don't follow in Petco's footsteps. For those unaware, Petco is based out of San Diego, for what it is worth.

Will Idaho Charge for Bags Going Forward?

It is hard to see the residents of Idaho allowing stores to get away with charging for bags. If the law were ever voted on, it is unlikely it would pass, but if it did, how would Idahoans react? I have friends in California that said they would not pay when the law passed years ago, but eventually they caved, or they carry around their reusable bags everywhere they go. It is unlikely that residents of Idaho would stop shopping at Costco, or Walmart if only big chains went this route, but if every store changes, then residents are forced to pay up or carry bags everywhere they go.

It will be worth monitoring to see what happens next. Somebody always had to be first to start charging, and now that they have, other stores will be seeing how residents react and feel about it. I love shopping at Petco, but I am likely to carry out my purchases bag free going forward. Is this the start of something in the Magic Valley and Gem State, or is it just a corporation not understanding the market? We will update you if anyone else begins charging in the future for bags.
