What’s Legal and What’s Not With Screens and Driving in Idaho?
Driving in Idaho is always an adventure. You never know what you will see, how drivers around you will be, or what the weather will be like. Add to it that with technology, you have many more distractions when driving as well. Seeing how Idaho has long stretches of no towns, not much scenery, and not many stops, many prefer to pull out their phones, tablets, or some type of screen to help pass the time to get from one place to another. This sounds great in theory, but it can also be dangerous for the driver and for others on the road. When it comes to driving in Idaho, what can you legally get away with when it comes to screens in the car, and what is breaking the law?
Screens in the Car in Idaho
Watching a movie or a show while operating a vehicle is illegal in all states. Even in some states, it is illegal when parked. As the driver, it is your responsibility to keep your eyes on the road and not let a screen distract you, but there are also some strict rules you may not be aware of. According to an article on familyhandman.com, it is legal for people in the backseat to have screens, as the driver can not see them and they should not be a distraction, so long as they are facing away from the rearview mirror. What about the front seat passenger, though? This is where things get tricky, as it depends on the state. In some places, screens are not allowed in the front unless facing away from the driver, whereas in others they are allowed, and it is the driver who must remain disciplined and not get distracted.
Idaho Law With Screens in Cars
When it comes to Idaho what does the law say about having screens in the car when driving? Back in 2020 Idaho officially passed a no phone used by hand law. This law states that you are not to hold or support your device. You are allowed to access GPS or answer calls with one touch or with voice commands, but holding the phone is against the law. If caught violating the law, the first offense is a $75 fine, the second offense is a $150 fine, and the third offense is a $300 fine. These all must occur within a three year time span. Also if you have three offense within three years, it could result in a suspended license for up to 90 days. For more on the law, make sure to click the link above.
