What You Can and Can’t Do When Scraping Ice in Idaho this Winter

It is that dreaded time of year when the temperatures are below freezing at night, and it is cold in the morning. Many residents in the Gem State dread the walk to and from the car in the morning due to the brisk wind, the frigid temperatures, and likely the work that awaits them before they can escape in the warm vehicle. It is perhaps the worst chore to do in Idaho, and that is scraping ice off of windshields. Snow can be brushed off easily, although oftentimes it is heavy, but scraping ice takes more effort, and forces residents in the Gem State to spend more time in frigid conditions. Idaho Law For Scraping Ice Off Windshield

While it might be tempting to scrape as fast and as little as possible, like the picture above, that isn't legal in the state of Idaho. According to Idaho law, a vehicle is to not be driven if the windshield is coated in ice, snow, sleet, or dust, and if the view of the driver is obstructed in the front, the sides, or the rear. Meaning, it may be miserable in the cold, especially if it is windy, but the windshield, side windows, and back need to be cleared this winter in Idaho. If caught with ice still on your windshield, you could face a fine of up to $124. Save your money and suffer through the cold.
