The year of closures continues to roll on. Ever since the calendar has turned to 2024, it seems like it has been bad news for once-popular businesses and food chains. Many have announced that they have filed for bankruptcy in some form or fashion, with plenty also having announced the closures of locations across the country. In some severe cases, some companies have called it quits and closed their doors altogether. Ten years from now, this year will likely be remembered as the year that saw the downfall of some of the most successful retail stores and food chains once upon a time. There is another company to add to the list that is set to have mass closures, and once again California will be feeling the effect as much, if not more than everyone else.

The eighth largest retail company in the country, Walgreens, is set to close underperforming stores throughout the remainder of this year, and California is likely to feel a huge impact. Home to 580 locations, California has the second most Walgreens in the country, only behind Florida. With CVS and Rite Aid having already closed locations across the country, it was only a matter of time until Walgreens joined the party. For whatever reason, pharmacies are continuing to shrink nationwide, and it has forced Walgreens to reevaluate and to shut down stores that aren't up to par, meaning of the 580 stores in the Golden State, a decent amount are likely to close shortly.

The positive note is that Walgreens will remain open, so for those that use them as their pharmacy, you still can, but you may have to drive a little further, as it is possible your location could be one of the ones that close. As of this writing, no list has been given of what stores will be closed, so standby for updates. The company has had layoffs to cut salaries and implemented cost-cutting measures. It will be interesting to see how many stores close and how it affects the company moving forward. The next time you are at your Walgreens, it may not be a bad idea to ask your pharmacist or clerk if they know anything, to see if you need to adjust your prescriptions. The year 2024 rolls on, and another company is closing more locations. The question now is, who's going to be next?
