If you haven't heard by now, Golden Corral in the Magic Valley has closed. While it is sad to see a beloved and popular restaurant close, one of the bigger stories was how it closed. According to employees, there was no notice, as they showed up to find out they were out of a job. Not only were employees caught off guard, but so too were customers, many of which had gift cards, and coupons, and ate at the restaurant regularly. It has left many stunned and trying to figure out what happened and what could have gone differently. While the restaurant will be missed, could it have been saved if residents had a say and could stop the closure? Too many places have closed over the last few years and should a law be in place to allow residents to save certain restaurants, stores, and companies if someone is willing to invest in them or to stop them from closing suddenly?

Companies and businesses have the right to close whenever they want. The owners can fire people, close their doors, and run their companies how they choose, but should there be a few more guidelines to even the playing field? Golden Corral's closing left many frustrated that they didn't get a final chance to use their discounts, and it left employees looking for a job on a dime. Similar to how most places expect a two-week notice when an employee decides to leave for another job, quit, or leave for whatever reason, companies should have to do the same thing, especially major chains. It gives employees time to find a job and it gives customers a chance to visit one final time.

Twin Falls Changing to Fast

Rumors began circulating instantly when Golden Carrol closed about In-N-Out buying the location or Raising Canes buying it. Twin Falls has seen a few places over the last few years get bought out and changed from one restaurant, store, or company to another, but shouldn't residents be able to vote on this? Perhaps the community would rather have Golden Corral instead of In-N-Out or Raising Canes. Too many places are leaving and new ones are replacing them, but if the community wants the former more, shouldn't they have that choice? Sadly, this is not how business works, but it should be something that should happen and give residents a voice to decide what is and is not available in the Magic Valley.

Despite what we may or may not want, these restaurants, stores, and companies will continue to do what they choose, and not care about their employees, their customers, or the communities they are leaving behind. Sadly, they care more about money than the happiness of the people they once employed and served. If a voting system could be put in place to give residents more power, it could make Twin Falls better and happier moving forward, and stop places from doing what Golden Corral did, and close in the middle of the night without notice.
