(KLIX) – Local education and community-based organizations are among those that may apply for five-year grants to operate after-school programs.

The Idaho State Department of Education said about $1.5 million in grant money is available starting in the 2020-2021 school year.

Those that may submit grant applications, which are due by Jan. 31, 2020, include local educational agencies, community-based organizations, tribal organizations and other public and private organizations.

“Idaho’s 21st Century Community Learning Center afterschool programs are instrumental in supporting the whole family,” coordinator Sheena Strickler said in a statement.

“Our programs have the ability to reduce achievement gaps by supporting students academically, socially and emotionally. Afterschool programs also help alleviate child care costs and keep our parents working.”

Funding for the grants is available through Title IV, Part B, of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 201, the department explained in a news release.

The education department will host four free regional workshops across the state, including one for the Magic Valley, in November to help applicants understand the process and requirements.

“Idaho’s 21st Century Community Learning Center afterschool programs," says coordinator Sheena Strickler, "are instrumental in supporting the whole family."

The Magic Valley event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the Twin Falls Public Library.

To register, visit the State Department of Education website. The department said participants should download the Application Guidance and Scoring Rubric before attending the workshop.
