The next four days are going to be hot in Southern Idaho! With temperatures in the mid-90's it's extremely important to be prepared when playing outside.

I made a classic summer mistake this weekend. I knew it was going to be warm on Saturday so I coated myself in sunscreen before leaving my house. To my surprise, when I got home that evening I was fried!  I forgot  to reapply sunscreen. This left my forehead, nose and arms burnt to a crisp.

According to skincancer.com, an estimated 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer. And according to EWG sunscreen makers are permitted to tell consumers that with proper use, their products can help reduce the risk of skin cancer

Here are some sunscreen tips to ensure you aren't burnt to a crisp during southern Idaho's hot summer months:

  • Make sure your sunscreen is broad-spectrum protection and is SPF 30 or higher.
  • Use only water resistant sunscreen
  • Use at least 1 ounce of sunscreen on all body parts that are not covered by protective clothing.
  • Apply your sunscreen 15 minutes before going outside and re-apply every 2 hours
  • Creams are best for dry skin and the face.
  • Gels are good for hairy areas, such as the scalp or male chest.
  • Sticks are good to use around the eyes.
  • Your sunscreen should last for three years. After three years you will need to discard it and purchase new.
