Have you always wanted to have a horse on your property, but maybe the finances have never really lined up? What if someone PAID you to adopt one of those beautiful animals? Well, that's exactly what the Bureau of Land Management is doing! According to KTVB, BLM is now offering financial incentives for those interested in adopting wild horses and burros.

This is part of their efforts to control the over-population of these animals on BLM lands. Right now, it's estimated that the population of wild horses and burros is at about 82,000. According to KTVB, that population exceeds what the land is able to support. When the population reaches that "chronic" level, it poses threats of damage to rangelands and "raises the possibility of starvation and thirst among the herds."

So, that's where the incentive program comes in. BLM is willing to pay you cash for each adoption. According to KTVB, if you qualify, you would receive $500 within 60 days of the adoption, and another $500 within 60 days of the titling (which usually takes about a year from the adoption date).

BLM understands that adopting any type of animal is a big commitment, so they're hoping this incentive will help folks with training and care for the animal. According to KTVB, since 1971, about 245,000 wild horses and burros have been adopted. BLM says tackling the overpopulation is a big priority for them so they can protect their health and protect our lands.
