I grew up in a great household. My dad's military background transitioned him into specialized areas of law enforcement, which kept us moving around… a lot. If I was lucky, I’d make it an entire year in one place before having to move on to the next.

Transferring mid-year was a common occurrence. I was fortunate in that I always seemed to make new friends and find my way quickly, but that doesn’t mean being the new kid didn’t sometimes suck. Do they still make kids stand in front of the class and talk about themselves? Friendly note to teachers: please stop doing that.

All that aside, my greatest challenge was more on the academic side. I was a good student, but the constant moves strained my grades. I lacked the consistency and continuity to help me be successful. With each transfer, I found myself in a different place in the curriculum than I was at my previous school.

Sometimes I was ahead of the curve and had to wait for the class to catch up with me. Other times, I found myself behind. In high school, I had to retake three classes I had already completed because the credits didn't transfer.

I would have loved to have access to a program like Idaho Technical Career College (ITCA). It's a virtual online high school that has flexible schedules and extra support for military families. They have all types of academics covered — they support those with IEPs and 504 plans, offer AP and honors classes as well as dual enrollment, and have several career pathways that prepare students for certifications:

  • Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources (animal science, plant science)
  • Business (business management, digital communication)
  • Health & Human Services (medical assistant, pharmacy technician)

Best of all, they are still enrolling for this school year, so whether you're dealing with scheduling issues, a big move, bullying, lack of academic offerings, or something else entirely, now's a great time to learn more. Visit ITCA.K12.com to get started.
