That X-Files Episode Where A South Idaho Pilot Gets Raided
As a major fan of the nineties FOX series The X-Files, I was surprised when I recently started the show over again from season one and discovered an episode where a pilot living in southern Idaho had his home raided in an effort to keep a military event a secret.
The X-Files aired from 1993 to 2002, and then again in 2016 and 2018. In total, there have been 11 seasons of the science fiction program that centers around two FBI agents who specialize in paranormal and alien investigations.
There's an episode in the first season (episode 2 titled "Deep Throat") where police raid a military pilot's home seeking answers about the crash of a top secret military craft. In the opening scene, the words "Near Ellens Air Base, Southwest Idaho," can be seen. While Ellens Air Base doesn't exist in Idaho, the inspiration for the episode is thought to have come from Mountain Home Air Force Base, which is located in the southwest portion of the state.

Another familiar site that the episode revolves around is Area 51 and the community of Rachel, Nevada, which is 430 miles south of Twin Falls, Idaho. I've personally driven up to the gates of the Groom Lake military installation and spent an evening at Rachel's Little A'le'Inn, of which an alternate site was used to depict the hotel in the episode.
The episode may not be geographically accurate, but it's still entertaining.
"The truth is out there."
