Christmas season is here, and with it comes decorations, shopping, and Christmas lights. Driving around and seeing the lights is one of the best parts of Christmas. It is always exciting to see what your neighbors will do, what new additions some homes will add, and to see the festive lights throughout town. There are displays throughout the area, in parks, downtowns, and all over the Magic Valley. While decorating with Christmas lights is fun and exciting, it is the competition that comes with it that can determine how your house looks each year in the Gem State.

You may not be aware of it, but there is a Christmas light competition that takes place every holiday season in Idaho. There are no prizes, no judges, and nobody announces a winner, but for many men in Idaho, their house must not only look better than their neighbor's but also look better than any house on the street. Some will sit out this competition each year, but others, have to go above and beyond and make their house the most festive, the brightest, the most decorative house on the street, if not in the entire neighborhood. There is a certain pride that comes with decorating a home for the holidays.

Putting Up Christmas Lights in Idaho

Putting up lights in Idaho is hard work. It is often bitterly cold this time of year, as well as the wind can be a major factor. It is best to put up decorations and lights early, to take advantage of warm weekends and less wind, but leave them off until the holiday season arrives. The problem with putting them up early though, is that it tips off your neighbors what you have planned for this year, allowing them to buy extra decorations and lights, to put your display to shame. Yes, this is all in the heads of men, but it is a big deal to lay claim to the best house, and thus the competition can be intense throughout the holiday season.

There are certain neighborhoods where the 'King of Christmas' has been crowned and it is not worth trying to compete. We all know these homes, as they are the ones that everyone in the Magic Valley will drive by each year to check out, and have become a part of Christmas legend in the area. For other neighborhoods, there is a crown to be won, as long as wives allow their husbands to invest and obsess over winning the Christmas light competition in their heads, this holiday season.
