From Memorial Day to Labor Day in Idaho, it is called the 100 deadliest days because it is the time of year when more accidents happen on the road than at any other time. Idaho, especially the Magic Valley, sees far too many wrecks throughout the year and sees far too many acts of road rage. Many assume that texting and driving are the biggest issues, while others assume that speed is the biggest problem. While both texting and speeding are issues behind the wheel in Idaho, they are not the biggest issue on roads in the Gem State.

During the summer tourists make their way to Idaho, young drivers are on the road more often, and many in the state are taking day trips. It can cause the roads to be more dangerous, but despite what many think, the common reasons for road rage and wrecks aren't the biggest problem facing drivers in Idaho. Speed is a part of the biggest problem, not because drivers are going too fast, but the opposite. Far too often drivers in Idaho are going slower than the speed limit. Some may think this is safe, but it makes the roads much more dangerous. Going fast stays with the flow of traffic, while going 10 to 15 under the speed limit forces other drivers to slam their brakes and puts other drivers at a major risk on the road.

Too many drivers in the Gem State, especially in the Magic Valley are apparently in no rush to get to their destinations as far too many are driving not only a couple of miles under the speed limit but often 10 to 15 or more under the speed limit in some circumstances. It forces drivers to have to stop suddenly and can have a trickle effect behind them forcing someone to be rear-ended. It can also lead to road rage as drivers get frustrated by not being able to go the speed limit and get around a slow driver. On two-lane roads this becomes especially dangerous as it can force drivers to attempt to go around the slow driver, putting them at risk of a head-on collision.

If everyone would go the speed limit it would help make the roads safer in the Gem State. If you find yourself behind one of these drivers that goes well below the speed limit, make sure to take a breath a relax. While it can be irritating, it is better to get to your location safely than trying to get there quickly and putting yourself at risk. For those who are a slow driver, put your foot on the gas and get closer to the speed limit to make the roads more safe.
