California Man Gives Epic FU to HOA
Why We Love to Hate HOA’s
Homeowners Associations (HOAs) are organizations established within communities, typically in planned developments or condominium complexes, to manage and enforce rules and regulations for properties within their jurisdiction. They are governed by a board of directors composed of community residents and funded through membership fees paid by homeowners. HOAs set and enforce guidelines on various aspects of property use and appearance to maintain a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing neighborhood. These rules can cover a wide range of issues, including parking regulations, exterior paint colors, landscaping requirements, and restrictions on the types of materials used in home renovations. While HOAs aim to protect property values and enhance community living, disputes can arise when residents feel the rules are too restrictive or unfairly enforced.
Seaside, CA Man Forced to Fence His Boat Gives HOA the Finger
In Seaside, California, a homeowner recently devised a clever solution to an HOA mandate requiring him to erect a fence to conceal his boat parked in the driveway. He built a fence and commissioned an artist friend to paint a mural of his boat on the front-facing side of the fence. Despite the mural being a debatable eyesore, the mural not only complied with HOA rules but also added a touch of humor to the situation. And kudos to the artist for creating an uncanny likeness of the boat. Any passerby glancing at the mural could easily mistake the work of genius for the actual thing.
Speaking of Middle Fingers…
The clever Seaside, CA mural reminds me of the Utah homeowner from back in 2006, who was forced to rebuild part of his home after a neighbor complained to the city that the peak of the home wasn’t up to code. After losing a plea with the city, the costly reconstruction included an attic vent that the owner claimed was reminiscent of a cactus plant in the desert. But we all know what was going on here, don’t we? According to an archived story from the Salt Lake Tribune, the vent cover was taken down a short time later.
