Survey Says Life is Better Without Kids in the Golden State

Having a family is a dream that many people have. Growing up everyone is taught that you have to go to college to get a good education, then get a good job, marry someone, buy a house, and have kids. While this is what society tells us is the goal, it isn't for everyone. Some don't want to go to college, some rather do other things than work a normal job, and others prefer being single and not having a place so they can travel. Everyone's goals in life are different. While society may tell us having a family is what is expected, many in California say not having children has made their lives better, and it is hard to argue with them.

Why Californians Don't Want Kids

Having kids can be the most rewarding part of life, but it isn't for everyone. A recent study came out on marketwatch.com stating that many claim life is better without kids in their lives. In this study, the couples that do not have kids are referred to as DINKS, which stands for dual income, no kids. According to the survey, 61 percent claim they could comfortably afford kids, meaning money is not a factor, but 39 percent say that having kids would prevent them from having the lifestyle that they prefer. With stats that no parent wants to see, 92 percent said that there are financial benefits to not having kids, and 89 percent claim the lack of kids has helped their relationship improve. One of the big reasons for not wanting kids for many DINKS is money, and 40 percent say that wealth is more important than having children. 

No Kids in California

Maybe the biggest stat of all to come out of the study is that on average, parents save $413 a month, whereas DINKS save $908, which is more than double what parents save. What do DINKS decide to do with all their extra money? According to the study, 56 percent use it to travel, while another 56 percent use it to increase their savings. With no kids, what do DINKS do instead? 62 percent said that they decided to focus on their relationships, while 61 percent said they prioritize their mental health. In a number that will make parents jealous, 29 percent of DINKS said they plan to retire early, with 45 percent saying not having children makes this a possible goal.

While having kids is great, these numbers make a strong case for not having children. The memories are fantastic, but the thought of having a bigger savings account, taking more trips, and retiring early are compelling arguments for not having children, or getting rid of the ones you currently have.
