The Boise State regular football season has come to an end. While the season went through some ups and downs, the result was a similar outcome: a Mountain West Conference championship. This is the expectation in Boise, and if the Broncos aren't competing for and winning championships, the season is considered a failure. Those are the expectations that come from a team that has been the standard for non-power conference teams. Despite winning another conference championship, is this season a failure by Broncos standards, and how should fans feel about the 2025 season?

The Boise State football season got off to a rocky start this year, with a surprising loss to South Florida, 34-7. That loss would not be as bad as initially thought, as South Florida ended up being a better team than most thought. The Broncos would then rebound and win their next three games, before losing to Notre Dame 2807. The Broncos would get back on the winning side by winning three in a row once again, before losing back-to-back games against Fresno State and San Diego State. The Broncos would then close out the season with two wins, to end the regular season at 8-4, and find themselves hosting the Mountain West Conference Championship. The team would finish the season winning their third straight conference championship, defeating UNLV 38-21. With another conference championship, a 9-4 record, and awaiting a bowl game against Washington in the LA Bowl on December 13, why does this season feel like a letdown?

Was this season a failure? It is hard to say a season is a failure when it ends with lifting the championship trophy for your conference, especially considering it is your final time playing in that conference. The reason fans are left slightly disappointed is that Boise State is the winningest program since 2000, and expectations are high every season. Fans expected this season to be different than last season after losing a Heisman finalist and top ten pick in their do-it-all running back, Ashton Jeanty. Last season, the Broncos lost only one game, by a field goal to the eventual number one team in the country. They wouldn't lose again until the College Football Playoffs. Despite all this, hope was high for a return to the playoffs once again. The team hasn't experienced many 4-loss seasons, having suffered that many losses only five times over the last 25 years.

The Broncos will have a chance to end the year with another 10-win season if they can defeat Washington in their bowl game, marking the 19th time they have done so since 2000. Was the season a failure? No, but perhaps it underachieved a bit. The Broncos knew replacing Jeanty would be a tough task, and they have enough to build off of as they move to a new conference to have high hopes for next season and a return to the playoffs.
