The Magic Valley in southern Idaho is a kayaker's paradise. From Twin Falls to Hagerman, there are countless spots to pull off at and launch.

I've kayaked all over the western United States, and Idaho is way up on my list of the most memorable afternoons out on the water. There's one portion of the Snake River, 35 miles outside Twin Falls, that is a true test of stamina for those who prefer more of a workout.

Personally, the thing I enjoy the most about the hobby is relaxing and taking in the scenery, so I try to avoid heavily populated areas and swift currents.

The community of Hagerman is less than 13 miles outside Wendell. It's in the Snake River Canyon section of the area off Highway 30 where you'll find Thousand Springs State Park.

The area includes a visitor center, waterfalls, picnic lawns, Ritter Island, and numerous underground springs that bubble to the surface throughout the park. It's a stunning region in the Magic Valley that also plays host to the annual Thousand Springs Festival of the Arts.

Just expect more of an advanced kayaking experience upon leaving the calm waters surrounding the park's grass area. As you get out further on the river, the currents pick up quite a bit, offering a more strenuous trip around Ritter Island.
