Little Big Town’s ‘Over Drinking’ Is Dang Country [LISTEN]
Little Big Town's new song "Over Drinking" explains the follow-up to those country song-worthy moments when we drink to forget our sorrows. After name-dropping Hank Williams' "Tear in My Beer," the four-piece tells a much different story about when heartbreak subsides and trips to the bar go from ill-advised attempts to self-medicate to deserved respites from the daily grind.
Readers can press play above to hear "Over Drinking." Accomplished Nashville songwriters Ashley Gorley, Cary Barlowe, Hillary Lindsey, Jesse Frasure and Steph Jones collaborated on the track, which tells a logical second chapter to the classic sad drinking song. When sung by Karen Fairchild on lead vocals, the latest Little Big Town offering mirrors Runaway June's "Buy My Own Drinks" by turning tales of codependency on the bottle and a former lover from country music history into triumphant tales of going out on the town for a little self-care.
"I'm over drinking over you / I'm done with bottles and chasin' the blues," goes the chorus of "Over Drinking." "I'll still go out with the boys and knock back a few / But I'm over drinking over you / Yeah, I'm over drinking over you."
Little Big Town are slated to perform "Over Drinking" live on television for the first time on Thursday (Sept. 12) during the 8AM hour of NBC's Today. The song previews the country quartet's recently announced ninth studio album, Nightfall, due out on Jan. 17, and its accompanying headline tour, which begins the night before (Jan. 16) at New York's historic Carnegie Hall. It'll be the venue's first headlining performance by a mainstream country act since Alan Jackson in 2013.
