Watch Your Back Immediately When You Hear Code Red in Idaho

Idaho law enforcement issued a CodeRED over the weekend.

And it wasn't a test.

On Saturday, April 21 at around 9:30 p.m., the Boise Police Department sent a CodeRED notification to city residents near the intersection of S. Roosevelt and W. Dorian streets.

Residents were instructed to remain inside, keep their doors locked, and call 911 if they noticed any suspicious activity.

Why did Boise P.D. issue the CodeRED?

The April 21 alert was triggered by a manhunt for the gunman who shot an Ada County Sheriff's Office deputy during a routine traffic stop 30 minutes prior.

Led by BPD Special Operators, the unit attempted to bring the 65-year-old suspect with a $3,000 outstanding arrest warrant into custody when he began firing at them.

According to the Idaho State Journal, the unnamed suspect was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. Sadly, ASCO Deputy Tobin Bolter succumbed to his gunshot wounds the following morning.

What does CodeRED mean in Idaho?

The CodeRED emergency alert system is an initiative launched by ASCO in partnership with other emergency and first responder agencies across the state. A 2018 ASCO press release described CodeRED as an ideal medium for notifying residents of:

public health & safety threats;
missing & endangered persons;
severe storms & weather conditions;
& state/local evacuations.

Unlike emergency systems in many other states, Ada County Emergency Management points out Idaho's CodeRED system uses GPS to target specific geographical areas via calls, texts, and emails.

Idahoans also can choose the alerts they want to receive, set a notification radius up to 25 miles from their home, and opt into the nationwide CodeRED network. To opt in to Idaho's CodeRED network, sign up with Ada County Sheriff's Office.
