BOISE, Idaho (KLIX) Idahos suicide prevention hotline is now four years old with expanded service featuring an additional number and text feature. The Idaho Suicide Prevention Hotline launched a new are code number: 208-398-HELP (4357). The new number will supplement the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Network 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

The new number provides help 24/7 and also allows people to text in from 3 p.m. to midnight, Monday through Friday. Since the hotline opened, it has taken 14,000 calls with 5.400 just this year. At first the hotline had limited availability. Then in 2014 it was able to move to 24/7 service with 75 trained volunteers.

We are grateful for the amazing support we’ve had since launch, and excited to be providing crisis text response to better reach young people in Idaho. Our additional number and text service will make it easier for all Idahoans to find a compassionate person when in need. Remember: You don’t have to be suicidal to contact the hotline, anyone in crisis is welcome to reach out.” Says Director John Reusser.
