Is Tipping Required in Idaho in 2025?
Everywhere you go, it seems like every place is asking for a tip when you check out. You order, you pay, and before you put in your PIN, it asks how much you want to tip. It is the default these days to have to tip, and you have to go out of your way not to, and then guilt can set in. This has become the norm, no matter where you go, and it has raised questions across the Gem State. Is it required to tip now in Idaho, and is there a punishment for not doing so?
Is Tipping Required in Idaho?
Contrary to what stores want you to think, tipping is not required. It has sadly become the norm, though, for places to expect tips. When you go out and eat, you will likely tip your waiter or waitress, or tip your delivery driver. That does not mean you need to tip the person working at the register at a fast food chain, a drink store, or even at a shopping center. These places have their systems default to asking for a tip, but why should you tip when they didn't go above and beyond and only did their job? Do you get tipped at work for doing a good job on a project or doing what is required of you? The answer is likely no. Perhaps you get a bonus, but no tip. Tips are to be earned, not expected, but sadly, in 2025, it is frowned upon when you don't tip.
Tipping in Idaho
While some have no problem hitting the 'no tip' button, there are others who feel guilty and pressured to tip, despite not wanting to. Some don't realize the extra fee when checking out at places and have been tipping for years without realizing it. This is what stores are hoping for and how they are emptying your wallet and milking customers for every cent. In a society where everything is getting so expensive, every dollar matters, and this is why tips should be earned more now than ever, but sadly, are expected for showing up to work. Showing up is not tip-worthy, and if it were, many would have more money. Is it ok for companies to pressure you to tip? They have that right, but you should not feel guilty for deciding to hit 'no tip' or put in $0.00 when it asks how much you want to tip.

The next time you are out shopping, getting food, or getting a drink, unless the service is good or you are being generous, don't feel pressured to give a tip to someone working behind a counter or only taking your order. These employees are getting paid for doing their jobs and may not have earned a tip like in the good old days. Tipping is not required, and you shouldn't feel bad about not tipping someone for doing what is required of them at work in Idaho.
