Be Safe and Be Smart on the Roads this Holiday Season in the Magic Valley

The holiday season is in full swing and the roads are proof of this. There are more people out and around town this time of year. It seems like nobody is working when you go to the store and see how crowded it is, and going to any store after 5 PM, is a nightmare. Each intersection is backed up, each parking lot is full, and getting around town is taking twice as long as it once did. With so many people out, and the weather being unpredictable, adding rain, snow, and ice, it isn't uncommon to see a few more accidents this time of year. How can residents of the Magic Valley lessen these accidents from occurring, and what can be done to make sure everyone makes it home safely this holiday season?

Don't Trust Other Drivers in Idaho

Driving during the holidays is like a game. It is competitive, there are no rules, and it gets nasty on the streets of the Magic Valley. The best way to avoid accidents this time of the year is to not trust any drivers. When a stoplight turns green, always wait a few seconds and continue to check all ways, because it isn't uncommon to see someone run through the light to avoid sitting through another cycle. When it comes to parking lots, always assume a person will walk in front of you, and anticipate that every car will back out without seeing you. If there is a gap between you and the car in front of you, it is safe to assume there is a chance someone might try to squeeze in front of you, especially on major streets. Don't trust anyone, and be alert at all times. 

Looking at Christmas Lights in the Magic Valley

One of the biggest distractions this time of year driving is Christmas lights. When driving at night, many cars are slowing down, swerving, or coming to a complete stop unexpectedly to view the pretty lights and displays. If you are driving near any displays, expect cars to slow down or stop, and make sure to not rear end anyone in the process. Instead of getting impatient, perhaps take some time to enjoy the lights and forget about the stress of driving for a few seconds or minutes. The lights can be a problem, especially the over-the-top displays, which is why it is best to keep your eyes on the road, unless in a line or pulling over to view the lights yourself.

The holiday season has only a couple of weeks left, and soon the people on the road will hibernate to avoid the winter conditions on the road. Be patient, be kind, and be alert on the roads a little bit longer, and it will all be over soon. Make sure to take your time, obey the rules of the road, and try to have some joy this holiday season, instead of holiday road rage.
