When picking a place to live there are many things to take into account, such as schools for your children, the cost of living, the job you will have, and how you adapt to the climate and weather. Sometimes a few boxes are checked, and other times a few don't meet your criteria. One thing that should be checked for anywhere you decide to live is how safe the place is. When it comes to safe states, there are a few things to consider. There are different types of safety that you must consider when ranking the states, such as personal and residential safety, financial safety, road safety, workplace safety, and emergency preparedness. WalletHub released a list ranking the safest states in the United States to the worst using these five main categories, and it was determined that Vermont is the safest state in the country, beating out Maine and New Hampshire. The least safe state to live in is Louisiana, being more dangerous than Mississippi and Arkansas which also made up the bottom three.

As much as we all would like the think Idaho is one of the safest places to live in the United States, it does not crack the top ten, but Idaho does come in at 14 on the list. The state ranked well, coming in at 8 in personal and residential safety, but ranked terrible in workplace safety, coming in at 46. Surprisingly, with road conditions in the winter the way they can often be, Idaho ranked 6 in road safety and also ranked well coming in at 18 in financial safety, and 15 in emergency preparedness. Ranking bad in workplace safety isn't a surprise with all the factories, farmers, and outdoor workers in the area, but a high rank on road safety was a tad of a surprise, with less traffic may be playing a factor in the good ranking, since cars mean fewer wrecks.

While Idaho may not be one of the top ten safest places to live in the country, it is still safer than many other places in the country. As long as you don't go to work you should be decently safe, but unfortunately, not many of us can afford to make that a reality. Continue to make good choices and stay safe out there Idaho, and next year perhaps we can crack the top ten.
