In 2024 Easter took place on the last weekend of March, happening on March 31. Residents in Idaho, Washington, and Utah will have to wait a little bit longer as Easter will be close to a month later this year, taking place on April 20. This means that Good Friday will be on April 18, and Palm Sunday will be on April 13. With Easter having taken place last year nearly a month earlier, what has caused the change and why is Easter so late this year? 

Why is Easter Later This Year?

What happened to make Easter fall so much later this year than last year? For those unaware, the lunar calendar is what dictates when Easter falls each year and the holiday always falls on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon. For those asking, 'What is the Paschal moon,' it is the first full moon after the March or spring equinox. This year the equinox occurred on March 20. Easter always falls between March 22 and April 25, making this year one of the latest dates you will ever see Easter fall.

While it may still be a few weeks away, and people will have to wait longer this year for the holiday, it will be worth the wait. There will be Easter egg hunts happening in the Magic Valley as Easter approaches, with many also taking place on the holiday.
