Halloween is over, and many people are sad that they must wait another year to dress up, scare people, and collect candy. It is the part of the year now where there is a few weeks between holidays, with some focused on Thanksgiving and others skipping over turkey day and looking towards Christmas. When it comes to the holidays, some enjoy decorating and preparing for the festivities months in advance, while others prefer to celebrate each holiday individually and then begin focusing on Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving. When is the proper time to begin decorating for the holidays and to start getting in the festive mood in the Gem State?

Some believe that Christmas decorations should be put up the weekend after Thanksgiving day, and then some put them up right after Halloween, if not before. Both answers can be correct, but in Idaho, the best time to put them up is when the weather allows. Each year is different, but the weather always drops in the fall and gets too cold to be outside decorating a home for the holidays. Each year there appears to be a random day or weekend that there is little to no wind, the sun is shining, and even if in the 40s or 50s, it feels nice outside. This is the window to decorate for Christmas. It can be in the middle of November, the day or two after Halloween, or perhaps a week or two before Halloween. The weather dictates when Christmas decorations should go up.

While some will stick to the more traditional route of waiting until after Thanksgiving to decorate, the argument of waiting until after the holiday is a little stale. Not many decorate for Thanksgiving, meaning putting up Christmas decorations now is acceptable. Even if they are out and up, it doesn't mean they have to be on. It is about getting them in place before the freezing weather arrives. It is important to note, when choosing what decorations to have in your yard that the winds are often strong through the late fall and early winter in Idaho, and to make sure all decorations are secure. Expect to lose one or two each season, from damage, or being blown away from strong gusts of wind.

Keep an eye on the weather in the coming weeks, and when a certain day pops up when the sun is shining, the wind is minimal, and the temperatures are a little warmer than most, use it to your advantage and take it as a sign to get out and put up your Christmas lights and decorations. Now is the time to welcome the holiday season to Idaho.
