Tim McGraw, Faith Hill Deliver on Promise for Amazing 95-Year-Old Fan [Watch]
A lifelong country music fan in Charleston, S.C., got more than she asked for when she attended a Tim McGraw and Faith Hill concert on April 20.
Mary Small has been a devoted fan of country music her entire life, naming Jimmy Dickens and George Jones as particular favorites, and when McGraw and Hill announced their 2017 Soul2Soul Tour, her granddaughter, Tia Pettygrue, tried to get tickets. When it turned out that the seats were out of her price range, she turned to social media to ask for help.
It wasn't long before the story came to the attention of McGraw's team, who set them up with tickets to a concert in Charleston. On April 20 — the day before she turned 95 — "Grandma Mary," as everyone calls her, not only got to see the couple live in concert, she got to meet them backstage.
“She said, ‘If I get to give Tim a hug, you think Faith will be mad?'” Pettygrue told Taste of Country when the story first broke, laughing. “I said, ‘I don’t think so, Grandma.'”
As it turned out, not only did Faith not mind, she joined in for a big group hug. The gregarious lady charmed the stars instantly, advising McGraw, "You got someone good ... don't turn her loose. You got something good, keep it."
Grandma Mary even got to wear a crown and blow out a candle on a cupcake, but nothing could have been sweeter than when she joined Tim and Faith for a trio rendition of "He Stopped Loving Her Today," with McGraw turning in an uncanny impression of George Jones' singing voice.
The Soul2Soul Tour has featured a number of special moments, including a gender reveal on opening night and a touching backstage moment in Tupelo, Miss., where Hill sang an impromptu duet of “Mississippi Girl” with a young girl. They also debuted a new song, "Break First," on stage and opened a show with their own version of an Aretha Franklin/George Michael duet, "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)."
