Winter in Idaho can be rough. For someone who isn't born and raised here, it may take a winter or two to adjust. There is more snow than in other places, it is cold, and it lasts for much longer than winter in other places. There is plenty of good that comes with winter as well. There is snow to play in, there is snowboarding and skiing, there is sledding, and who doesn't enjoy sitting by a warm fire around the holidays or to warm up? While winter can be hit and miss in the Gem State, there is one part of the season that makes Idaho unbearable during the winter and is the true enemy of the season.

The Bad Parts of Idaho Winter

While there is good to winter in Idaho, most people like to focus on the negatives. There are a few of them. It is cold. It is very cold. The driving conditions are not ideal, as there can be inches or even at times over a foot of snow, making it tough to get going and making the roads dangerous. The children are locked in the house since it is so cold, and it will drive a parent insane, especially if you have multiple kids. Cabin fever begins to kick in for those without kids even, and residents miss being outside. There is a lot to dislike, but the worst part has to be the wind.

The temperatures in the winter can at times reach single digits, or go even below zero. It makes it unbearably cold, but if the air is still, it isn't too bad. Most would prefer a single-digit day with no wind, than a day of 34 with wind. While it would be above freezing, the wind is what makes the cold hurt the most, and at times can feel like having hundreds of knives being thrown at any exposed skin. It makes your bones cold and can make getting from the vehicle to a building seem like the toughest task of your life. When the roads are full of snow and ice, the wind can get so strong that it makes it tough to maneuver your car properly, and puts you at risk of sliding off even more. When the wind is blowing as the snow falls, it can be blinding and make it feel like you are in a galaxy far far away.

The winters in Idaho can be tough to navigate at times and the length of them doesn't help. The ice can be dangerous to drive on, the snow can be a major obstacle, and the cold can make you shiver for hours. While the cold, the snow, and the ice, can be bad, it is the wind that is truly the enemy of Idaho winters. Bundle up, because we got a long way to go.
