The Shoshone Police Department assisted in a high-speed chase yesterday, the second in two days. Thankfully no one was seriously injured, but it wasn't without damage.

Yesterday the Shoshone Police went to training in Hagerman and on their way back they heard about a pursuit between Twin Falls County Deputies and a black Honda Civic. The Honda Civic left a gas station in Hollister without paying, so Chief Smith and Officer Mix went to help with the situation. Chief Smith and Officer Mix used their vehicles to block the on-ramp to the interstate near Bliss while Sargent Thongsana and Officer Rodriguez helped with the chase near Wendell.

At that point, another officer arrived near Chief Smith and Officer Mix to put down spike strips and disable the vehicle that was traveling more than 120 miles per hour. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Jesus Antonio Reyes, swerved into the median, trying to hit officers and lost control of his vehicle. At that point, going about 90 miles per hour, Reyes smashed into Chief Smith's patrol car, destroying it.

An officer ended up getting hit by Chief Smith's car after it was struck by the speeding vehicle. Other officers were hit by debris. K9 Eros who usually rides with Chief Smith was thankfully not with him. It took a quarter mile for the speeding vehicle to finally stop sliding down the road.

Antonio Reyes was arrested for felony eluding, aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated battery on a police officer and possession of a stolen vehicle. Reyes was transferred to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center for further treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. The Gooding Officer was released from North Canyon Medical Center after being treated and released.

It is insane what these police officers have to deal with on a daily basis. Sure, these high-speed chases aren't exactly the norm but that doesn't mean life-threatening danger is not something they deal with every single day. We have so much appreciation for these men and women who serve our community.
