One thing I always notice when traveling through Nevada or the southern Idaho desert at night on a road trip is trains. I've always been curious about taking a train ride to a state like Colorado to soak in the scenery and let others do the driving.

My good friend worked for Union Pacific for a few years, and his route took him from Salt Lake City into the Nevada desert. He described the job as "hairy" sometimes, because of the things he swore he saw at night while traveling on the train.

He would tell me of faces he would pass in the night. Animals that played chicken with the train and strange lights in the sky. He never traveled north into Idaho, but had he, I may have heard firsthand accounts of strange goings-on along the tracks 40 miles south of Sandpoint.

The stories all involve what has been described as a "shadow" figure carrying a light source very close to the tracks east of Hayden, Idaho, and in an area called Colburn Creek. The website Idaho Haunted Houses mentions the stretch of tracks as one of the most paranormal spots in the Gem State.

Make sure to pay attention if you're ever taking a train ride through this section in the state's panhandle. Maybe you'll see the shadow man taking an evening stroll near the tracks.
