The world is moving faster than ever before, it seems that everyone is in a rush at all times. Driving, work, family, errands, and in all aspects of life, most of us are in a rush and looking to capitalize on the time we have in a day. Elderly people seem to slow you down and can make using your time a little more difficult. Older people typically want to have long conversations, they will get in your way, and their slower pace rubs off on you when out in public. Sometimes slowing down isn't a bad thing, and taking a few minutes to have a conversation with these elderly individuals can make their day and yours as well. We all need to take a breath and slow down and live life more like the elderly individuals, but for those of us that live a fast-paced life, they can be a slight burden.

It is no secret that as people get older, they seem to drive slower. Most of us at one time or another have been stuck behind an older person driving well under the speed limit and find ourselves frustrated when we can't get around them. While the anger builds and you want to ram through their car, they might be doing you a favor. Yes, it is irritating, and driving so slow can cause road rage and accidents, but these elder drivers may be saving you money and your life. By taking a breath and driving more at their pace, you will avoid tickets, and may avoid an accident as well. It may seem like a burden, but slow down and get in touch with your inner older person, especially when the roads are icy. If you start yelling the phrase "whipper snapper" at cars speeding by you, you may be too in touch with your inner old person.

While some of us will use our lunch break to run errands or maybe be in a hurry at the store, often older people are retired and in no rush at all. They walk slower through stores, they block the aisles and they often will block the section you need to get to. It is not uncommon to see two elderly people having a conversation in a store, but when it is in front of the milk, the bread, or the item you need, it becomes a burden. Odds are they are in their conversation and oblivious to you needing the item they are blocking. By slightly nudging their cart out of the way, you can get your item, and not interrupt the flow of the conversation. These elderly shoppers are happy to be out of the house, so take a breath, don't interrupt, and everyone can be happy. You lose a few seconds of life, but that is ok.

Cranky Old People in the Magic Valley

Everyone knows that one older person or couple growing up would yell at kids to get off their lawn, yell profanity at others, and be downright mean. As people get older they can often become more cranky, and that doesn't do good for anyone. This crankiness can scare kids, spreads to other, and makes others angry, and it can hurt people's feelings. While attempts to be nice to these cranky individuals will likely fail, it is their loss. These are the older people that will sadly miss out on kids trick-or-treating at their house and they don't get to see the costumes. They also may miss out on Christmas cookies for the neighbors. If they can't smile occasionally, then they sadly miss out on some fun and good treats.

The Smell of Old People

Close your eyes and picture back to your childhood when you would visit your grandparents' house. Can you see it? Now, can you smell it? For some reason, older people seem to adopt smells they didn't once have, and while most aren't bad, there are occasionally a few that seem to be more potent than others. For most of us, the smells will bring back fond memories of our time with our grandparents and will make us miss them or want to call or visit them, but for a select few, the smell can be a bit much. There is nothing that can be done about it, and it shouldn't be a burden since people that aren't old can smell as well. If you find yourself around a large crowd of older people and the smell is getting to you, odds are you may be in the wrong place. If they outnumber you by that much, you are on their turf and may need to skedaddle.

Having a short conversation isn't easy, but perhaps making some time to sit down and talk with one could be therapeutic. If you are chatting with one, yes you are using time that you could be doing something else, but you also are able to take your mind off of the things weighing you down.

Older people may seem like they are taking up space and waiting to die, but that is not the case. They have plenty of life left to live and the problem may actually be the younger generation. These people have paid their dues and deserve to be respected and appreciated. Instead of viewing them as a burden, maybe we should all live more like them, and the Twin Falls could become a happier place. The next time you think of an older person as a burden, relax and be happy because at least they aren't teenagers.
