For a region that's made up of primarily desert landscape, Southern Idaho boasts a ridiculous amount of hot springs, waterfalls, lakes, and ravines that offer outdoor enthusiasts incredible backdrops for hiking, kayaking, soaking, off-roading, rockhounding, and mountain biking. Located just a couple of hours drive west of Twin Falls is an area that might be off the beaten path, but is definitely worth exploring for adventure seekers.

Sage Hen Gulch is a region of southwestern Idaho that is approximately 200 miles west of Twin Falls, and encapsulates everything a daytripper could possibly want. There are miles of hiking and ATV trails that intersect Highway 95, as well as one of the area's best swimming holes near Succor Creek. The landscape in this region of the Owyhee Mountains is rugged, with loose, jagged rocks that is better suited for adults than children.

It's been a spell since I've traveled through this part of Idaho that offers Bruneau Dunes State Park a short drive to the east, and the Oregon border less than an hour west. October is a great time of year to explore this tributary. The cooler weather provides relief after several months of extreme heat and very little shade.

An abundance of birds and butterflies are known to also inhabit the area, and for those that like to hunt for rocks or buried objects, it's a known spot for finding quartz and jasper. There's still plenty of time this fall to make your way out to Sage Hen Gulch to take in this beautiful expanse of Idaho desert.
