Retirement is something we all prepare for our entire life. For many, retirement seems far away and for others it’s right around the corner.

But when it’s time you can’t just retire from the world and hide in your home. You still have some of the best years of your life to live…you just get to sleep in if you want and your spouse is the only boss you have to answer to. So, where is the best place (and the worst) to retire in the US?

State to the West of ID is Home to All of the Worst Places to Retire

People love to talk about Florida when they talk about retirement, and the numbers back it up. Of the top 10 places listed as the best to retire by Wallet Hub, half of them are in Florida. The only city in the West to make the top 10 was Casper Wyoming. California doesn’t qualify as a good place to retire until 36th place on the list with San Franciso and Idaho appears just after that with Boise at 39th.

But it’s when you look at the worst places, the bottom of the list, that California really takes over.

CA is Home to More Than Half of the Worst Places to Retire

Looking at the data from Wallet Hub, you can see that of the 20 worst places to retire in the United States 11 of them are in California with Bakersfield, Rancho Cucamonga, Stockton, and San Bernardino coming in dead last.

Where is the Worst Place to Retire in Idaho

Boise isn’t one of the most appealing places for retirement but it is the best place on the list in Idaho. The only other city in Idaho to qualify for the list came in at 97th place, and that was Nampa.

Obviously, there are a lot more than 2 cities in Idaho. Sun Valley might be a nice place to retire or some other mountain town, but Boise and Nampa are the only cities with large enough populations to make the judgement list on Wallet Hub. They only looked at the 150 most populated cities in America and if a state didn’t have 2, they took the 2 most populated in a state (like Idaho) so there was some sort of representation for everyone.
