A deadly accident near Pocatello, in Southern Idaho, was reported by the Idaho State Police on Tuesday morning.

The accident involved the trailer of a semi-truck and a sedan.

Detached Semi-Truck Trailer Causes Deadly Crash on Southern Idaho Highway

The accident happened early Tuesday morning, a few minutes before 4:00 AM, on westbound US 30 at mile marker 332, northwest of Pocatello. The report from the Idaho State Police states:

A 20-year-old male out of Pocatello and a 24-year-old male out of Idaho Falls were traveling eastbound on US30 in a white 2024 Freightliner semi-truck.

The Freightliner was hauling a single trailer, which became disconnected from the truck and was stationary in the westbound lane on US30.

A 52-year-old male heading westbound on US30 in a silver Mercury Grand Marquis struck the stationary trailer.

The driver of the Mercury was wearing his seatbelt, but passed away at the scene of the accident. The crash blocked travel on the highway for around 6 hours, and the Idaho State Police are investigating.

The Idaho State Police also shared a post on social media about the importance of not using the emergency highway crossovers. Even though the crossovers are marked for ‘Authorized and Emergency Vehicles Only’ there are some non-authorized or emergency vehicles that attempt to use them.

The social media post included pictures of a car that had been hit while illegally attempting to use one of the crossovers to bypass a traffic jam.

ISP says that people attempt to illegally use these crossovers often.
