Idaho Turkey Season Looking Plump
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX)-The number of wild turkeys in Idaho are expected to provide a good hunting season this year according to state wildlife officials.
In a report published by The Idaho Department of Fish and Game the turkey season will follow one of the best big-game hunting seasons in years. The population of turkeys in the Gem State are stable and growing due to consecutive mild winters. In some places Fish and Game says the population is pushing the tolerance of private landowners.
Most of Idaho’s turkey hunting units are located in northern and western parts of the state, which stretches from the Panhandle to the Clearwater, and into the Snake River Region. General seasons run from April 15th to May 25th and youth (10-17 years old) only general-season goes from April 8th to the 14th. Other parts of the state offer limited controlled hunts. The Magic Valley Region is limited to controlled hunts. Good news for hunters though is tags where increased for this year to 90 tags, 60 adult and 30 youth. All turkey hunts for the region are in Unit 54 which is mainly in the Big Cottonwood Wildlife Management Area in the eastern part of the South Hills near Oakley. It has seen an increase in the population of turkey. Fires in 2012 destroyed a good portion of the turkey’s habitat in that area which has since recovered. According to the report above-average snow fall in 2015-2016 helped the area around the Big Cottonwood where about 120 birds wintered.
