The Natural Medicaid Alliance of Idaho is reporting that they've gathered over 150,000 signatures in support of the 2026 state Medical Cannabis Act that would make marijuana usage for certain illnesses and conditions legal if the package gets enough backing from voters at the end of the year.

If enough Idaho voters pass the act in November, it would mean doctors could legally prescribe cannabis to treat such conditions as cancer, AIDS, epilepsy, and chronic pain, according to information shared by the Idaho Press.

To date, more than 40 states have passed legislation allowing for the use of marijuana in cases of medical usage, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Marijuana usage, both medically and recreationally, is still illegal in Idaho.

The NMAI, which is headquartered in Boise, is in support of allowing patients who are in pain from a number of different chronic conditions the opportunity to use numerous strains of cannabis that have shown to be affective at providing relief. These prescriptions would require a medical diagnosis and recommendation from a state physician.

Voters will have the opportunity to support the Idaho Medical Cannabis Act on November 3, provided it passes the signature verification process. The NMAI successfully submitted the signatures to the state by the deadline of May 1, 2026, which now officially qualifies the initiative for the November ballot.
