Moving from New Mexico to Idaho revealed one glaring difference in people. Idaho is much taller than New Mexico. The average height may be 5 feet 4 inches for women and 5 feet 9 inches for men nationally, but not so for Idaho. Living life in New Mexico at 5 feet tall is much simpler than in Idaho.

There is no end to the struggle of being short in Idaho. Publicly, sitting anywhere leaves legs dangling unless you sit with a pillow behind your back so your feet touch the floor. Get used to tingly feet by the end of a meal as your legs fall asleep sitting in the restaurant booth.

Getting items at the store is forever a challenge. Shorts can’t reach the rear of some middle shelves, much less the top shelf.

What Short People in Idaho Have to Do

An extra step stool in the master bedroom closet allows for reaching the top shelf, and the back of the second shelf. Us the little kid’s stools in their room for the closet there.

There is never a day without a step in the kitchen to reach the top shelf, or to help climb onto the counter to get above the refrigerator.

In the garage, keeping a lightweight option with wide feet is always nice for mobility into rooms that don’t already contain stepstools. When necessary, there should be a 3-step stepstool available as well as an adjustable ladder.

The Shorts Can Get a Little Revenge

There is one small reward to being a foot shorter than your spouse. When they forget you were the last one to drive the truck. Watching the painful knee bump, head squeeze, and crouch that happens every time they have to adjust the seat.

Go ahead. Jump in the seat without looking. Sweet, sweet revenge.
